One Year Old

Dear Etrain,

How did this happen? How are you already a year old? I can't believe it. I've heard people say - the days are long, but the years are short. This couldn't feel more true. There were plenty of long days, and I guess if I think really hard I remember them. But it just doesn't seem that long ago that you were a tiny little newborn.

I keep telling people this story - probably because I'm having a hard time getting over it. I receive weekly emails that talk about what other babies that age are doing developmentally. The subject line always reads "Your Baby This Week". Today the email said "Your Toddler This Week". What?! Toddler?! But you're still a baby. Or perhaps technically you aren't. That may be what they call kids your age, but sorry kid. You're always going to be my baby. I'll probably still be in denial when you're five...and probably 15...and older.

This past month was fun. Well, it's always fun, but this month was the beginning of the holiday season - Thanksgiving, Christmas decorations, and of course, your birthday party. You haven't started walking yet, but a few other things you were into included these...
  1. -- You still love to get into everything. Every drawer, cabinet, shelf - you name it, you've opened it up and threw everything out.
  2. -- You especially love doors. You could open and close them all day.
  3. -- You love going up and down the stairs. You're getting quite confident on them which makes me nervous, yet glad that you seem to have it down.
  4. -- You pull yourself up and cruise around on your feet (while holding onto something) pretty well. You got an awesome toy for your birthday that makes you look like an old man with a walker, but you rock it like a champ. We walk all over the house with it.
  5. -- Your crawl is so awesome. Is it bad I don't want you to walk yet? You tear around the house on your hands and knees so fast and it's just the cutest thing to watch.
  6. -- You've gotten extra shy lately. Some people you'll smile and babble to. Others you bow your head to the side or snuggle into the shoulder of whoever is holding you.
  7. -- You love to fill up boxes and buckets then dump them out. You're figuring out which shapes go where...sort of. Well, you have circle down. You'll also sometimes roll the ball back and forth with me. Your roll is more of a flick.
  8. -- You love the toothbrush, but hate having your teeth brushed. And speaking of teeth, you've got you two fangs coming in. Dada knows the proper name for those teeth - I like calling them fangs.
I missed the first couple months, but since 3 months old I've been taking photos of you on the chair in your room. Everyday on your birthday we have a photo shoot and it's gotten pretty fun. You try to climb out of the chair every time, but I just keep snapping and usually capture some awesome shots. Here's a little recap since the day you were born. Look how big you've gotten!

Ethan, my Instagram post is true. This has been one of the hardest years, yet it it has also been so amazing. Watching you grow and learn has been such a joy. Your Dada and I love you so so so much.

Happy birthday my sweet boy.

Love,
Mama

P.S. Check this out...
