Sleepy Baby

Dear Etrain,

When you were a little baby we spent a lot of time together while you were asleep. You'd fall asleep in my arms all the time - many times right after nursing. You were a crier, so when you would finally shut it down I didn't want to move and wake you up, so I'd just sit there. Sometimes I'd sleep too. Sometimes I'd watch tv or play on my phone. And sometimes I'd take the opportunity to take a photo of how adorable you looked. Turns out I took a bunch of photos. The photos don't even capture how precious the moments were, but I remember them. I miss them.

It's rare that you'll fall asleep in my arms these days. Now we sit in the chair in your room and you get a bottle before nap or bedtime. After the bottle I stand up, rest your head on my shoulder and rock you in my arms before laying you in your crib. Every once in a while you'll fall asleep right then. I can tell you're extra sleepy because you'll tuck your arms under your belly like you do when you're laying down. Then I feel you go extra limp and I know you're out. It's those times that I hold you extra tight, and sometimes don't lay you down for a long while. I want to soak up every bit of your sweetness before I have to let go.

This photo makes me laugh. We just had you in this onesie a couple months ago for pumpkin carving. It was a bit tight, but it still fit!
Valentines Day

Yes I posed you in this shot. I never got professional photos taken of you when you were a newborn. I was feeling guilty about that because you were already getting bigger and you can only get those cute sleepy baby photos while you're really young. So I figured I'd give it a try myself. I'm no photographer, but you stayed asleep as I moved you around and took a million photos. And yes, I had one printed and it's on our shelves now.

My babies *sigh*
Here you are almost 5 months old. Part of our morning routine was that I'd go get you out of bed and bring you into my bed. We'd lay down next to each other while you'd nurse. After we switched to the other side you would often fall back asleep and I'd get to enjoy snuggling with you. Our mornings together were some of my favorite times.

You are such a great sleeper now. Actually you have been since around 5 months old - that's when you started sleeping through the night. The first time you did it I woke up in a panic, but there you were, sleeping soundly in your crib. The downside of you sleeping through the night was that my milk supply (which was already light to begin with) started drying up. You were getting frustrated that there wasn't a nice fast flowing supply like there was from your bottle, and you even bit me a couple times (we can save that story for another time). I was really sad to let go of nursing, but you decided for me. One day you just wouldn't latch on and broke out the hysterics when I tried. So that was it, no more nursing. We had our struggles with nursing, but I loved all the good times. I loved snuggling with you and of course, holding you after you passed out on me.

Almost 6 months old

It made me nervous when you started rolling on your belly while sleeping - which happened around 4 months. We were still swaddling you for bed, and I didn't like that your hands weren't free to be able to get yourself onto your back again. We stopped with the swaddle, and soon after that this magic began (note crib shot above!). Butt in the air. I love it. It's probably one of the funniest things you do, and still do.

As you got older, the sleepy baby shots were replaced with action shots. They're a little harder to capture because you move so fast, but I love watching you play so that's okay. You're rad. Keep it up.

I love you precious boy,
Mama
