Your First Vacation

Dear Etrain,

As you may have already figured out, your dad and I love to travel so, we were really excited to take you on your first vacation. We chose Kauai because we had been there before, and since traveling with a 4 month old baby for the first time was going to be very new and possibly challenging, we figured it'd be a good to idea to go somewhere familiar and cut down on the unknowns. Plus Kauai is gorgeous.

You were such an awesome traveler. You did great on the plane and won the hearts of the flight attendants and other passengers around us. When we got off the plane we were waiting at the door for your stroller and just about everyone who got off said what a good baby you were.

We stayed at Hanalei Bay Resort which is in Princeville and has amazing views of Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai. The unit we were in couldn't have been more perfect. We were only a few steps from the pool and after a mini photoshoot your dad took you in right away. That may have been your first time in a pool and you loved it.

A couple days later we took you to the beach and Dada took you in the ocean. It was a bit cold, so you weren't really a fan.

The whole vacation you let us lug you around everywhere and I'd say you were pretty chill. There was only one day you had a mini meltdown. We had gone to a beach that was an hour away. When we got there we pitched your tent and tried to get you to nap. You were not interested in napping or nursing. We left pretty soon after that and we hoped you would sleep in the car. Nope, you screamed basically the whole way back. Your dad even posted a video. Poor boy. Little did we know that, in addition to no nap and no interest in nursing, you were teething.

On Cinco de Mayo we decided to go to the Kilauea Lighthouse. On the way there is a pretty cool plaza with shops and restaurants so we decided to grab lunch first. I had gone inside the restaurant to order something while your dad was at a table with you outside. When I came out your dad told me I had been gone too long and I had missed a huge event (he's so silly). Then he told me he noticed you had popped your first tooth! We were so surprised because everyone says what a nightmare babies can be while teething - lots of crying, bad sleep, not eating well and just generally fussy. Other than that meltdown the other day, you had been your usual happy self the whole trip. We made it too the lighthouse and it was a beautiful and windy day. We took some photos of the sights, but most of my photos were of you because once again, you were the cutest and happiest little boy.

Our flight home wasn't until the evening, but we had to checkout of the hotel early. To fill the day we decided to take you to Waimea Canyon. It's on the other side of the island and up a long curvy road. We stopped at our favorite restaurant called Island Taco before heading up. At the top we got out to see the beautiful canyon and of course take some photos. You weren't really in the mood for photos, but it was also a tad chilly and windy. Some weird older man asked us if he could take a photo of you because you were so cute. If it hadn't been for his wife standing next to him, we probably would have said no. Thinking back, we probably should have said no anyway, but whatever, he was right - you were cute.

We had such a fun trip. You were a great little trooper, especially with all your firsts (first airplane ride, first time in the ocean, first tooth...first trip to Hawaii!). It's too bad you won't remember it, but I guess it just means we'll have to go back when you're older.

Love,
Mama
