Dear Etrain,
This month started out with Father's Day and a visit from Grammy! We kept to your usual schedule while Grammy was here, but we did have a few outings including a dinner at one of our favorite places in Laguna Beach. You and Dada always seem to find a way to have fun while waiting at dinner. Father's Day was also that weekend and we made sure to treat Dada.
No visit with Grammy would be complete without a photo shoot. Per usual you were questionably cooperative. Well actually you were just being silly, but I did manage to get a decent photo or two. But Ethan, what's up with the finger up the nose? Really, kid?!
You're still really enjoying your soccer class. It's a pretty simple class with fun drills for the 2-3 year old age group. No games or anything. I sort of wish I had put you in the older class because you are by the the most advanced in the class. You listen, follow direction, and can do all that is asked of you without needing my help. Basically the rest of the class has their parents hovering over them because I think they're just too young to do it on their own...let alone just sit there. I'm just glad you're having fun. This is only six weeks long, so if we do this again, I think I'll put you in the 3-4 year old class.
One thing to consider if I move you to the older class in soccer is that you'll move to the older class at My Gym...which means you'll go to class alone. I don't go in with you. So this week, we tried out the older class. Well, actually, you went right in on your own. We finished the younger class with me, and you didn't want to leave the gym floor, so I asked if you could just stay and try the older class. You did wonderful and weren't even phased that I wasn't in there. By the way you been loving the monkey bars lately.
One day we were sitting out front. Well, you were probably riding your scooter or playing with the ATV. Anyway, you were done with that and wanted to pick up the broom. You said to me "Mom, I want to sweep the leaves." You're such a cutie pie. Always love to help your dad when he's doing yard work, or I guess when he's not around also.
You now officially have a best buddy, Isaiah. He's in the class older than yours at school, but you two LOVE to play after class (and probably during play time at school too). You'll often give each other hugs hello or goodbye. Now that it's summer (and SUPER HOT lately) Isaiah's mom and I have set up some play dates at the beach. I didn't know what to expect the first time we went, but it was sort of perfect. You two just ran around and played the whole time, only stopping for food and water. It means we have to push your nap, but you kids are so active that you just come home and crash. I feel bad for some of the young girls you two try to flirt with (by young I mean teenagers or older), aka borderline harass on the beach, but it's so cute to see how much fun you two have together.
You will still occasionally go to Nana and Papa's on Sundays, and they still like to take you to church with them. Nana dressed you in the most adorable shirt, I had to take your photo.
We're excited to use the pool this summer. In previous summers, we've basically just used the spa because your swimming wasn't...well, you weren't swimming. And you were smaller and we didn't need the space. But now that you moved up a level in swim class and are better in the water we want to splash around in the "big pool". We even went to Walmart and bought a bunch of cheap pool toys. You've been loving it.
Our neighborhood had the annual 4th of July parade. The doughnuts, coffee, and chatting with the neighbors was nice, and this year you had a scooter to ride, which you seemed pretty excited about. Once the firetruck started down the street for the parade you were off and scooting...then you got tired and there was tantrum that ended the parade for us.
Our 4th ended on a high though. We spent the afternoon at our neighbor's house like we did last year then once it got dark we went out to light some fireworks. We actually hadn't planned on keeping you up for the real fireworks, but time got away from us and they started right as we were brushing your teeth in our bedroom...which happens to be the best place in our whole house to watch them. We could see at least three shows and you thought they were pretty cool.
This summer I've been really conscious of making an effort to show you a fun summer. It's sort of strange because your school goes year round, so not much has changed for us except for just adding in more activities. We've been going to plenty of parks, beaches, play dates and more.
I mentioned it's been hot this summer. It's really been hot. Like it's too hot to go to the beach today and we're doing the pool later, so let's go somewhere air conditioned...like the bowling alley. It was such a hit last time, we figured we'd do it again.
Always love a good fort.
When you were a baby, you were OK with hats. Didn't love them, but didn't hate it either. Then you went through a phase were you just hated hats. Couldn't get you to keep it on. Recently we got you a hat and you love it. You ask to wear it almost every day. Not sure if it's because it has a monster truck on it, or maybe it's because Isaiah wears a hat all the time. Either way, with all the outside time we have with soccer, beach, and general outside play, I'm glad you're down with wearing it. I'm also glad you'll let me put sunscreen on you without a fight.

Back at the beach with your buddy. Twinsies with those shorts. |
Seems like not too long ago, your dad and I met with your teacher for parent teacher conferences. She said you were basically great at everything, but could use some work on pretend play. Well, lately you've been stepping up your game. I still don't think you love pretend play, but I think you're into it when it's with a topic you like. For example, trucks. I hear you making up little stories with your trucks all the time. On the day shown below, you randomly came to me and asked if I would "play construction" with you. I have to be honest, I'm not the best at pretend play myself, but you and I I had fun playing construction.
I sent a text to dad with the photo of us sticking out our tongues, saying we were playing "constructure." He sent us this photo back saying he was playing "work." That Dada sure does know how to make us laugh.

A friend at school decided to color on your face. |
Naps are getting more difficult (or unpredictable) these days. When you do nap, it can be up to three hours long, but when you fight it the afternoon becomes more interesting. Not sure why you rebel. We could have a super busy morning and you just won't nap. Or we could have a mellow morning and you will nap. Or some other combo can happen. Either way, I never really know when you're going to give in. Sometimes I think you stay up, just to fight it because you can. If I catch you awake I might tell you to put your head on the pillow, close your eyes, and go to sleep...and you will...80% of the time. You are the sweetest little boy and will usually stay in bed even if you are awake, but you did have a little rebel phase, hence the photo below. This was what I caught on camera. You and I had a talk and you're back to just staying in bed to rest. I'll keep it going for as long as I can.

Don't mind my finger. |
I've had a bunch of fun with you, my silly little boy. More to come next month!
Love,
Mama
P.S. You caught me finishing writing this and wanted to type your name. So I scrolled to the bottom and let you start banging away at the keyboard. This is what you came up with. You started with "Isaiah is 4 and I am 3." Then you wanted to write both of your names. You almost started up on your name again, but lost interest when you couldn't find the t again:
