Dear Etrain,
We had another rough start to our month. The cold from last month was still going strong and all of us had it. The worst part was the cough. None of us seemed to be able to get rid of it fast enough. As I write this, we have all only been healthy for this last week or so. It took a looong time to go away completely. Needless to say, we've been coming up with lots of activities to do at home. One of which is the ATV. It's a remote controlled ATV guy that you got for your second birthday. It was a little too advanced for you at the time, so we put it in a closet...and forgot about it until now. You LOVE that thing. You get a little frustrated when it doesn't drive in the direction you want, but it's still your new favorite.
We put a hat on you because it's so sunny outside and won't wear sunglasses. You won't wear a hat any other time, but you'll put one on for the ATV. We don't have one for you, so you wear dad's...and it's so darn cute.
But the real tough part about the start of this month was when you bumped your head. Backing it up. We had a play date with one of my MOPS moms and her son. We had a great time and were just saying goodbye when you put your head up to a store window...at the exact same time as someone was coming out of the store and made the sliding glass door slide open and bop you on the side of the head. Specifically the temple. To be honest, it didn't look like you got bumped that hard, but you sure did cry.
We hugged and I gave you a bunch of kisses, then we got in the car to drive home. You cried all the way home, and when we were 5 seconds away from our garage, you threw up. Everything. My poor little boy. You were so upset, but it was the hugest mess. I carried your car seat, with you in it, to the grass to undress you before going inside. Got you snuggled up with an ice pack for your head...then called the doctor. Vomiting is a bad thing when you've had a hit to the head, so they wanted me to bring you in. After doing the best cleanup I could on that car seat, we headed to the doctor.
You were such a trooper for the doctor. Did everything he asked even though you weren't feeling good. He said you were fine, but to keep an eye on you for throwing up again. Well, that night there was an art gallery event at your school. In addition to the art you kids made, there was food, a bounce house and activities. You insisted on going, but I could tell you didn't feel well while we were there. You ate some goldfish crackers, but nothing else. You didn't really want to play with your friends or do any of the activities. Needless to say, we didn't stay long. And after we got home, you threw up again. All over the bathroom (your dad got to clean that one). But now I was worried and called the overnight nurse...who told me to sleep in the same room as you. Well with all our coughing, no one would sleep so I just had the monitor on really loud. Sure enough, at 3 am you threw up again.
By now I super worried, but your dad wasn't. He thought you just caught another sickness at the same time, and didn't think the ER at 3 am was necessary. I rocked with you for a little bit then, put you back to bed. You didn't seem to have another concussion symptoms so I figured we'd see how you were in the morning. Dad said you couldn't even keep water down that morning, so I called the doc again, and they had me bring you in again. And your doctor said you were still fine. He prescribed so anti-nausea medicine and sent us on our way. By the time we had picked up the medicine at the pharmacy, you were back to your normal self...mostly. You didn't eat much, but wanted to play. Especially with the ATV. For the next day or two you complained of a headache, which was probably why you didn't eat much. Poor boy. I wouldn't want to eat much either if I had a big headache after being hit on the temple.
You occasionally like to do crafts or art projects with me on the art desk grandma and grandpa got you for Christmas. While you weren't 100% we needed activities, so we tried drawing. At first you drew a "map", but then wanted to "do (your) letters". I was so impressed that you basically wrote your name by yourself. We have also be practicing spelling your dad and my first names, so you wrote mine too. My little boy is growing up so fast.
Speaking of growing up fast, I have two things to mention. 1. You are super consumed with being "bigger" or older right now. It must be daily that you ask how long it will take to be 5 or 6 or when your birthday is. You compare yourself to other kid's ages. You wake up from nap and tell me it's taking a long time to grow. It doesn't help that we had taken you to a toy store, and you saw a huge remote controlled monster truck. We told you, you had to be 6 years old to have that toy (the age on the box). Now you keep asking me when you'll be six. 2. We finally converted your crib to a big boy bed. We changed out the front of the crib so you can now get in and out on your own. You tell me at least every other day at nap time how much you love your big boy bed.
You still love to play kick ball. Mostly you like trying to kick it high in the air. This day you were talking so much while we were playing, so I pulled out my phone to record your sweet chatter...but of course you stopped talking as much and were not excited about me trying to get your photo.
These are just more cute shots of you...and an attempt to take photos with you.
You've been really into play dates lately. Always asking me if we can have a play date. By now you were a little better so we met up with more of my MOPS moms and their kiddos to play at a new park. Of course, you just loved the swings. The play dates are always interesting. Sometimes you'll play with the other kids, other times not. I think it mostly depends on how interested in trucks the other kids are.
The next day your school had a Mommy & Me Tea, and it was really sweet. We ate some scones (same scone crumb face as last year) and fruit, you kids did a little show, then gave us some presents you made. You weren't too into the song your class sang, but none of you really were. I was proud you didn't cry. You're present was pretty funny. They asked why you love mommy and your answer was "because she gives me monster trucks." Ha. Of course.
That weekend was Mother's Day weekend. Saturday we went to get bagels for breakfast. Nothing amazing happened except your hair. We just don't want to cut it. You look so adorable all shaggy.
The next morning you and your dad took me out to breakfast at one of our favorite places. You two were being silly at the table per usual. After we got home your dad took you out and let me rest for the day. I love you more than anything, but sometimes it's nice to have a day off to relax.
Lately, you've been doing great at swim class. No tears! I think you might actually be getting over your fear of sinking and you've pretty much mastered back floating. You know that when you're unsure what to do, just flip on your back and float until you can try again. I've been trying to reinforce your comfort and excitement for the pool, by heating up the spa when the weather is nice. It hasn't been super warm, but it was warm and sunny enough to have some fun.

I am so glad we are all healthy right now, and I hope we keep it up. You're a little more challenging these days. Perhaps it's the terrible threes and you just testing your independence, or maybe it's because you've been sick. Either way, the tantrums are bigger and much longer. The defiance is growing. Let's just say it's challenging. Oh, and you're rebelling hard on naps. I need those nap times, son! Don't stop now.
On the other hand, you are also super cool right now. You are such a talker. Some days you talk so much, I'm surprised you're only three. You and your dad have been working on your Spanish too. We have a book with colors and simple objects and you have most of it memorized. What's even more cool, is that you'll fit in the words in everyday conversation, when you're not reading the book. You love to play and be silly, as always. I hope you always keep that part of you.
I love you, handsome. You're going to be three and a half next month! Crazy.
Love,
Mama
