2 Years, 5 Months

Dear Etrain,

Oh wow, this was a busy month! I'm sad to report that you were still sick pretty much through the whole month, but it didn't really seem to phase you. You were the same happy kid you always are.

This past month started off with Easter weekend and it was packed with fun. On Saturday morning, our neighborhood got an early visit from the Easter bunny. People from our neighborhood gathered on our street and brought some yummy treats for everyone to enjoy. Then all the kids got to do any Easter egg hunt. This was your first hunt and it was so fun to watch you gather all your eggs. You even found one of the golden eggs that the Easter bunny hid. It had an extra special prize inside so all the kids had been hunting for it. Just as you found it, an older girl turned the corner and you handed it to her. It probably meant more to her than it would have to you, so I'm really proud of you for sharing.

After your nap that day we went to Nana and Papa Vigil's house for an early Easter dinner. Grandma and Grandpa North were there as well as Papa's cousin, Johnny. The Easter bunny had stopped at their house too and brought you some fun toys and hid some more Easter eggs. The toy bunny in the photo below has become your favorite sleeping buddy. Bunny has to be in bed with you every day now. It's pretty cute. Anyway, we had a great time watching you hunt for more eggs, then enjoyed a delicious meal together. Afterward we took some family photos, then your grandparents read you a book and sang the ABC's...which was pretty awesome.

Oh, almost forgot. The weekend before Easter you had hung out with Nana and Papa on Sunday, and they took you to church. It was Palm Sunday and you made a little palm leaf in Sunday school. It was the first arts and crafts sort of thing you had brought home for us, so I was pretty excited and put it up on the fridge. I had to take a photo of it so I'd remember your first piece of art...that wasn't a crayon drawing we did together. I love your creations, son.

The following weekend wasn't a holiday, but we packed a lot in too. It started with lots of basketball. You've been into basketball for a while now. You love to "shoot hoops" with us and chase the ball all over the house. That weekend, though, you were still into shooting from the landing on the stairs. You'd climb up withe ball, and make shots from there. You got a good number of shots in too. Maybe there's some basketball in your future? Dada loved to play basketball and was amazing at it until he hurt his knee, twice, and decided to stick to surfing.

I'd like to note your cute shaggy hair in these basketball photos, because later that morning Dada came home at took you for a haircut. A terrible haircut. The place you had gone before was pretty expensive so we thought we'd try something different. I found a barber that had decent reviews, and sent you and Dada there. Bad idea. They butchered you beautiful hair. You can't really tell from the photos below, but I'll post a photo of the back later on and you can see the hack job they did. I'm sorry, son. Hair grows. And even now, it's better than it was when we cut it. Anyway, we ended the day at the beach, which you always love because my little dirt magnet gets to play in the sand.

You and I had some fun times just playing and being silly together. Oh, and here's a photo of the back of your head and that terrible haircut. :(

One thing I'm definitely nervous to start with you is potty training. I've been talking to several moms about what they've done and their experiences, and I have to say it doesn't sound fun. In fact it sounds a little scary, since I don't really like messes. I fear poo and pee all over your bed, or worse all over the house somewhere. This is why I haven't really gotten you started yet. But we did buy you a potty...a while ago. The intention was that you'd be used to seeing it and being comfortable with it...and maybe get interested in using it on your own. I'm thinking preschool is helping because you're seeing all the other kids using a potty. One day you just decided to go sit on it when we were playing in your playroom (aka, the living room). Since that day, we've had your potty in the bathroom downstairs. We haven't used it yet, but every time I go into the bathroom, you come in and sit down on your potty too. It's pretty darn cute.

Another really cool thing we did this month is create a sandbox for you. We've always hated the ugly fountain in the front of our house. We didn't like running it so it was turning into a algae and mosquito pool, so we decided to rip out the fountain. Until we're ready to do a full front and backyard renovation, we figured we'd leave the brick circle there and fill it with sand. We had someone come out and remove all the parts, cap everything off, make the bottom smooth, then you and Dada went and bought some sand. Voila. Prefect sandbox for you and boy does it make you happy. We've already played in there a ton and it seems you can hang out there for a long, long, long time. One weekend we were out front playing in the sandbox and we heard the ice cream man pass coming. You had never gotten anything from the ice cream man so we figured we'd have a treat. You weren't a fan of the popsicle, but you loved the ice cream thing your dad picked out. Yum.

This past weekend was Mother's Day. Your school had a nice Mommy & Me Tea and I came to have tea and scones with you at school. You loved the scones, which you kept calling doughnuts. You had also made me a sweet picture frame.

Later that day Grammy came into town! I woke you up early from nap and we picked her up at the airport. You brought her home and showed her all your toys...and the sandbox of course. The next say we took you to the aquarium in Long Beach. I had thought it'd be a fun little outing since we had the whole morning open that Friday. I have to say, it wasn't the greatest of trips. You were fine when we got there, but I think the mistake was taking you outside first...and taking you to see the sharks first. Outside all you wanted to do was chase the pigeons and watch the guy digging with a small tractor over on the side of the park. I got you over to see the sharks, but just as you got up to the glass, a big one swam right in front of us and scared you because it was so close. After that it was sort of downhill. You didn't want to go inside, and once we got you inside you didn't want to go up to the glass...even though it was all just small fish. Oh well. It was a learning lesson. Next time we start inside with the small fish and work out way up.

Sunday was Mother's Day. Grammy and I slept in and when we woke up we had a nice breakfast together. You and Dada gave me my favorite flowers and a card, then you two went into the garage to build a umbrella together. The umbrella had nothing to do with Mother's Day, but Dada saved it for your two to work on so Grammy and I could relax. Of course I had a get a photo of you two using the tools together. So cute. You and Dada also sent Grammy and I to the spa that afternoon for massages and more relaxation. It was awesome!

You've had quite the tantrums and attitude lately, but I'm hoping it's just you being sick and uncomfortable. Other than "I want, I want, I want" all the time (we're working on "please" ALL THE TIME), you've also been into opposites. "I want" something, then I give it to you, then you don't want it so I take it away, and surprise, you want it again. And so on. Over and over. It's quite taxing, but again, I'm hoping it's just a phase. Otherwise, you are just the coolest little dude. You are so fun to hang out with. You love to talk, talk, talk. And I love to hear your stories. It's so fun to watch you experience life, continue to learn, and get into new things.

Thank you for being my son, Ethan. I don't know what I'd do without you. Although tiring at times, it's such a joy to be your mama.

Love,
Mama
