Happy Halloween?

Dear Etrain,

Sooo, I'm unsure on this whole Halloween thing. I have to admit I've been a bit of a grouch myself about Halloween. I always liked the candy (duh), and the decorations can be fun, but I've never really liked dressing up. I have hopes that as you get older, we'll have fun enjoying it together, but so far Halloween has been a tough holiday for you.

Last year we actually got you two costumes. When we were at the store there was this super cute shark costume that we just loved, but I was unsure about you wearing the headpiece, so we got you a Superman costume too.

Earlier that year a surfer named, Mick Fanning, had been attacked by a shark during a surf competition (he got away unharmed), so Dada thought it'd be fun for him to dress up as a surfer (Mick) and you would be the shark. Oh man, were you cute, but you HATED it. Cried and cried once we put that headpiece on.

I managed to get a few photos of you and Dada without tears, but you really calmed down once we took the shark head off.

Later that night we switched you into the Superman costume for trick-o-treating. You were much happier and we had a nice time going around the neighborhood showing you off to our friends. We didn't really gather a bunch of candy, but it was fun to say hi to everyone. They all thought you were adorable.

This year we knew headpieces were out of the question. Dada and I took you to the store and there weren't really any good options left in your size, but there was a basketball player. Dada recommended that we just dress you up as a Lakers fan. We have all the gear and it's way better than the dumb costume at the store. We also bought some other Lakers themed items like purple and gold glow sticks, and some Lakers balloons to decorate your stroller.

Halloween night Dada got off work early so we could dress up and head over to the old neighborhood. Since we're still in the apartment and you're not really old enough to care about trick-o-treating and gathering a bunch of candy, we decided to take you back to our old neighborhood. It's been a while since we've seen everyone and we knew they'd love seeing you.

We took some photos at the apartment and all was good...then we headed to the car. Oh my toddler meltdown city. You just lost it. Full blown tantrum with screaming, fighting getting in the car seat and lots of tears. I only recorded the end, but here you go...

The WHOLE car ride over you were still upset. We tried everything to distract you and the only thing that kind of worked was singing the ABCs with you. You'd sort of participate, then the song would end and you'd cry again. It was a long 15 minutes, but once we got there you were fine. We enjoyed spending time with our old friends and they loved seeing how much you've grown. You even gathered some tasty candy, which Dada and I gobbled up. Sorry son, no candy until you're older...or for as long as we can keep it from you.

In general we had a good Halloween, but so far it's been one of the rougher holidays. We'll see how it goes next year. I can't want to hear what you want to dress up as.

Love you my little Laker fan,
Mama
