Girl or Boy?

Dear E-Train,

Hey handsome! This is my first blog entry and I’m excited to tell you a fun story about this cake, but first let’s go back a little bit.

My story starts with an Ultrasound. The way it works is the doctors use sound in a special wand to let us look inside mommy's belly when you were in there growing. At first we only got to see little things, but as you continued to grow we got to see more and more until they can tell us if you were a boy or a girl. Some people don’t want to know because they want a surprise. Mommy and I wanted to know real bad, but we wanted it to be special so we asked the doctors to write it down and put it in an envelope for us. We were going to wait for a special trip we had planned and then find out. It was very exciting, we couldn’t wait!!!

A little side-note this special trip is called a “Babymoon”. It’s what daddy like to call a Hallmark Holiday (that means industry made it up so they can profit off it…it’ll make sense when you are older). But who cares, your mommy wanted to go somewhere special for our last trip before you got here so we chose Turks and Caicos. It sure was pretty there. It is a small island with beautiful beaches, blue water, warm air (but no surf). A perfect place to relax and enjoy each others company. Check out some of the pictures.

On our very last night I had planned for a fancy dinner. Your mom and I had a beautiful dinner overlooking the beach with tiki torches burning around us – it was really awesome. What mom didn’t know was I had been working with the hotel to get a baby cake made as our special dessert. What’s a baby cake? The way it works is you give the envelope that to the baker and they make a cake that on the inside is blue (for a boy) and pink (for a girl). Then mom and dad cut into it we find out together if we are having a boy or girl.

After our dinner the dessert came. Oh boy, here we go… Like a couple of goofs we took lots of pictures of the cake and I was about to cut into it but I couldn’t. There was too much stress. Blue = boy, Pink = girl…. what was going to happen? So I asked your mom to cut into it.

Blue = boy, Pink = girl
Blue = boy, Pink = girl
Blue = boy, Pink = girl
Blue = boy, Pink = girl
Blue = boy, Pink = girl
Blue = boy, Pink = girl
Blue = boy, Pink = girl

And…. cut the cake, cut the cake, cut the cake…..

What so we see?

YELLOW.

Wait? What? Huh? Whuzzawha??

Yes, the inside of the cake was yellow. Your mom and I were shocked. What does this mean? We were so confused. We stared at the cake trying to figure it out. Then we saw a thin layer of orange frosting and we thought – ok, orange. Maybe something happened and the pink mixed wrong and became orange and yellow – w are having a girl!!! Holy smokes. I’m going to have a little girl! Your mom and I were super happy (although we were still sort of laughing that the cake was yellow).

I wrestled with the fact that I was going to have to beat up all these little boys who want to take my girl out on dates, that I would need to learn how to play with dolls, and makeup, and all that stuff. It was super exciting (we had already picked a baby girls name but no baby boy names yet) but stressful too. As we sat there and started falling in love with the idea of a baby girl our waiter walked by. I asked him for the envelope so I could put it in your baby book. He handed it to me and mom and I sat there just smiling and talking about being parents.

A few minutes later, for no reason at all, I opened the envelope. And there it was… a note that said we were having a baby boy. I stopped, jaw dropped, and I looked at your mom - “Alex, we aren’t having a girl. We are having a BOY!!!!” Your mom was as shocked as me. We both didn’t know what to say. We were confused, excited and surprised again! It was so awesome. The truth is it was probably the most exhausted I have ever been after reading something. I looked at your mom after a few minutes and said “Alex, that was the wildest emotional roller coaster I have ever been on. I’m exhausted, let’s go to bed.”

It’s a great story. I tell it to people all the time and they smile and laugh. But if your favorite color ends up being yellow we’ll know why. ;)

Love Dad.
